1. Write to Encourage Just One Person

When the weight of the “masses” feels too heavy, I shift my focus. Instead of thinking about writing for thousands, I write to one real person who needs hope. This mindset shift makes the work feel personal and meaningful. Think of someone in your life who is struggling. Write as if you are speaking directly to them.

2. Create a Rhythm, Not Just a Schedule

Daily rhythms are essential for a sustainable career. I have found that having quiet time and writing before the rest of the house wakes up allows me to center my heart before the day becomes loud. This rhythm gives my family a sense of order and ensures I make the most of those early, quiet moments.

3. Match Your Energy to Your Task

Not every hour of the day is equal. Writing is a high-energy activity that deserves your best focus. If you find yourself in a mid-afternoon slump, use that time for research or administrative tasks instead of trying to force creative prose.

4. Batch Your Home and Writing Tasks

Sustainability often comes down to how we manage our domestic lives alongside our creative ones. To save time, I often cook two dinners at once or prepare meat for multiple meals in one session. By batching chores, I can protect my writing blocks.

5. Separate Writing from Editing

When you sit down to work, allow yourself to “write messy.” We often want everything to look excellent on the page immediately, but it is more important to get the words down first. You can always refine them later.

Writing and editing require different brain functions. When you are in a creative space, do not stop to fix sentences or look up minute details. Instead, leave a small note like “check details of the room” and keep moving. This prevents you from losing track of your characters and their conflict.

6. Practical Editing: The Power of the Ear

Once you have finished your draft, approach it with an “editor heart” rather than a “writer heart.” I highly recommend reading your work aloud or using a program to read it back to you. You will hear mistakes, such as repeated words or awkward phrasing, that your eyes might skim over.

Sustaining the Vessel: Health Tips for the Long Haul

To write for decades, we must care for the body God gave us. My own seventy-five-pound health transformation was not just about the scale. I now have the energy to fulfill my calling.

• Fuel with Protein: I have found that starting the day with protein shakes or high-protein meals stabilizes my energy. When our blood sugar is steady, our focus remains sharp for the deep work of writing.

• Hydrate Constantly: Keep a water bottle at your desk. Dehydration often masquerades as writer’s block or fatigue.

• Embrace Tiny Habits of Movement: Sitting for hours is hard on the body. I use tiny habits, like stretching or taking a short walk after finishing a chapter. These small movements refresh the mind and the heart.

• Rest is Productive: We often think we must push through exhaustion to be prolific. However, a rested mind is far more creative than a weary one.

• Focus on Nutrient Density: Prioritize whole foods that support brain health. The antioxidants found in colorful vegetables and the healthy fats in nuts, can improve cognitive function and memory.

My friend, have you ever looked at the choices in front of you and felt a wave of exhaustion? Sometimes the hardest part of faith isn’t the “big” moments, but the daily decision to keep our hearts anchored in the right place.

In our reading this week, we stand with Joshua as he delivers his final charge in Joshua 24. He looks at a people who have seen God’s wonders but are still tempted by the idols of the world. He gives them that famous, beautiful line: “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”

I remember a season when our house felt more like a circus than a home. With ten children (eight home at one time), life is loud, messy, and often overwhelming. I found myself battling a mountain of anxiety, wondering if I was doing enough or if my own “idols” of control and perfectionism were winning.

I had to realize that “choosing who to serve” started with choosing my heart’s focus before I even climbed out of bed. It’s so easy to let worry lead the way, but Joshua reminds us that the relief we crave comes through commitment to the One who has already proven His faithfulness.

Scripture Journal

1. Joshua 24:15: “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” What is one specific “idol” (like control, perfectionism, or the need for approval) that you need to tear down today to make more room for serving Him?

2. Psalm 91:1-2: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” When you feel the heat of your anxiety rising, how can you practically “dwell” in His presence during your busy day?

3. Luke 21:34: “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life.” What “anxiety of life” is weighing your heart down today, and how can you hand that weight over to Jesus?

But then, the records opened.

I discovered that I don’t just happen to love words. Instead, I come from a long, sturdy line of them. My family tree is heavy with the fruit of pastors, missionaries, and servants. 

Finding my father meant finding my history, and this morning, I laid eyes on a treasure that stirred my spirit to its core: a sermon preached on January 1, 1868, by my 4th great-grandfather, Pastor Friedrich Wyneken. (The link for the full sermon is at the bottom of this post.)

A Giant of the Faith in a Divided Land

Imagine the scene. January 1, 1868. A crisp, biting Missouri winter wind whistles against the heavy doors of "Lutheran Concordia" in St. Louis. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the wool coats of a congregation weary from years of upheaval. 

My 4th great-grandfather, Friedrich "F.C.D." Wyneken, stands at the pulpit. He is a man of grit—known as the "Thunderbolt" because he famously traveled through the American wilderness on horseback to reach isolated families (The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, Christian Cyclopedia).

He adjusts his spectacles and looks out at faces that have seen too much. St. Louis had just survived a harrowing decade. During the Civil War, the city was a "powder keg" of conflicting loyalties—a strategic gateway where brother literally fought against brother. Martial law had been declared, and the city was ringed by Union forts to keep it from falling to the Confederacy. By 1868, the physical battles were over, but the spiritual and social ones were just beginning. The city was overflowing with refugees and wounded veterans, and the Reconstruction era brought deep uncertainty.

Standing in that tension, Friedrich’s voice rings out with the text from Luke 2:21. He begins with a question that must have pierced the hearts of those survivors:

"By the grace of God we are starting a new year today. Where would many a one of us be if Christ had not prayed for us: 'Lord, leave it this one year while I dig round it and fertilize it' when God, the owner of the vineyard said in the parable of the fig tree: 'See, all these years I have come to collect fruit on this tree and there is none. Therefore cut it down, why should it go on using up the soil?'"

He was preaching to a people who felt like that fig tree—fragile, used up, and perhaps wondering why they were still standing. His message was a "Reality Reset" for his congregation, reminding them that no matter how the years change or how nations divide, the Name above all names remains the same.

As I read his words today, I felt a bridge forming between 1868 St. Louis and my home in Arkansas. Here are six truths from his heart that I am praying over my grandchildren as I look at their sweet faces:

1. A Prayer for Fruitfulness

"Lord, leave it this one year while I dig round it and fertilize it... for each and every guidance by God during the past year... was for only the one purpose... that we produce fruit for eternal life in Jesus Christ."

I look at my many grandchildren and I pray that God would "dig round" their hearts. I don't just want them to be successful. I want them to be fruitful. I pray that every experience they have—the joyful and the hard—would be the fertilizer God uses to grow a harvest for eternity.

2. A Prayer for the "Name Above the Unknown"

"You say 'We must move into the dark, the dark and unknown; and I am seized by fear.' — There is no need for that. Look, over the portal your God has painted a beautiful picture and written a name above it... the sweet, precious name Jesus."

The world they are growing up in can feel like a dark place. But my grandfather’s words remind me to point them to the "portal" of peace. I pray that whenever my grandchildren feel fear, they see the name of Jesus written over the door of their future.

3. A Prayer for Freedom from the Burden

"See now, that is the significance of Christ’s [work]. You must agree that it is of the highest importance for a lost sinner. For thus is taken from your shoulders the terrible yoke and horrible burden of the Law... so that you can go free."

I want my grandchildren to live in the freedom of grace. I pray they never feel the weight of trying to be "perfect" to earn God’s love. I pray they understand that the heavy lifting was done long ago, and they are free to walk in the light of His mercy.

4. A Prayer for a Father’s Heart

"Jesus is the end of the Law... the peace of your conscience, the joy of your heart, the hope for life, the victory over death."

Having missed that connection with my own earthly father for so long, this hits me deep. I pray my grandchildren never doubt the heart of their Heavenly Father. I pray they find their "peace of conscience" not in their own works, but in the finished work of Christ.

5. A Prayer for Mercy in the Storm

"Can a woman forget about her little child so that she has no mercy on the fruit of her womb? And if that were so, I will not leave you, see, I have written it into your hands."

With ten children—seven of whom came to us through adoption—I know that a mother’s love is fierce, but God’s love is even fiercer. I pray my grandkids always know they are "written into His hands." Whether they are walking through sunshine or a storm, they are never, ever alone.

6. A Prayer for a Lighted Way

"And even while you are in the throes of death, this beautiful name will lighten your way and bring you safely across: J E S U S!"

My 4th great-grandfather ended his sermon with that name, and I want my life—and the lives of my grandchildren—to do the same. My prayer is that from their first breath to their last, the name of Jesus would be the light that leads them home.

Prayers That Change History

Finding my heritage reminded me that prayers don’t have an expiration date. The words Friedrich Wyneken spoke in 1868, in a city still scarred by war, were a deposit into the spiritual bank account of my life today. 

He spoke of Jesus as the "End of the Law" and the "Joy of the Heart," a message I’ve spent my life trying to capture in my own writing.

Now, it’s my turn. Every time I tuck a grandchild in or whisper a prayer over their head, I am changing history. I am connecting the dots between a ship that arrived in 1836 and the books I am writing in 2026. We are a long line of servants, and by God's grace, that line isn't ending anytime soon.

I vividly remember the first time I decided to homeschool. It was 1993. The internet was barely a thing, Instagram didn’t exist, and I felt like I was stepping off a cliff without a parachute. I looked at my oldest son, then looked at the stack of catalogs I had gathered, and thought, “Who authorized me to do this? I am going to ruin him.”

Fast forward twenty years. My husband, John, and I adopted seven children, and suddenly I was a “new” homeschool mom all over again. I had to relearn how to teach phonics to a toddler while managing high schoolers. But this time, I knew a secret I didn’t know in 1993:

You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be committed.

Homeschool Basics

Breathe First, Plan Second

When you are starting out, the temptation is to buy everything. You want the desk, the globe, the laminator, and the $500 curriculum package.

My friend, Heidi St. John, a beloved speaker and author, advises the exact opposite. In her letters to new homeschool moms, she often emphasizes the heart over the plan.

She says, “Don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Pray. Ask God for His specific instructions. His yoke is easy. Make a simple list… You don’t have to be ready right now. You just have to be listening.”

3-Step Start:

1. Know Your Why: Write down the reason you are homeschooling (Faith? Academic struggles? Family time?). When February comes and the days are hard, you will need to read that paper.

2. Know the Law: Before you buy a single book, go to HSLDA.org and click on your state. You need to know if you have to file a “Notice of Intent” or keep an attendance log. Legal peace of mind is the best foundation.

3. Start with “School Lite”: Do not try to replicate public school at home. Start with just reading aloud and math. Add other subjects slowly.

Looking Deeper: The Imposter Syndrome

Friend, here’s the truth. The biggest barrier to starting homeschooling isn’t the curriculum. It is Imposter Syndrome. It is the voice of shame that whispers, “You aren’t patient enough. You aren’t organized enough. You barely remember algebra. Who do you think you are?”

We feel like frauds because we measure our “insides” (our messy doubts and fears) against other people’s “outsides” (their curated curriculum hauls and smiling first-day photos).

But this is important to remember: Your qualifications are not found in a teaching degree. They are found in the fact that you love this child more than anyone else on the planet.

You are the expert on your child. When you feel like a fraud, remember that you are actually a pioneer. You are charting a new path for your family, and pioneers are allowed to be scared.

Tiny Habits for the New Homeschooler

• The “One Drawer” Rule: You don’t need a schoolroom. Clear out one drawer in the kitchen for pencils, paper, and workbooks. If you can find the pencil, you can do the school.

• The “15-Minute” Read-Aloud: Commit to reading aloud to your kids for 15 minutes a day. That is it. If you do nothing else, you are building vocabulary, connection, and imagination.

• The “Buddy System”: Find one other homeschool mom. Text her when you have a bad day. Isolation is the enemy of longevity.

Starting this journey for your family might feel like standing at the base of a mountain, but remember you are not climbing alone. You have the heart, the love, and the specific calling required to lead your children well. When the days feel long or the math lessons feel impossible, go back to your “why” and let the peace of God settle over your home.

As Heidi St. John reminds us, “Don’t make it harder than it needs to be” (St. John). Focus on the connection you are building and the faith you are sowing into their lives.

You are the exact person your children need for this season, and with a little grace and a lot of prayer, you will find your rhythm. Take that first step today, knowing that the path will be made straight as you walk it.

Lord, I am stepping out in faith. I feel small, and the task feels big. Please guide my first steps. Help me not to lean on my own ability to be the ‘perfect’ teacher, but to lean on Your ability to lead our family. Give me peace in the chaos and joy in the journey. I trust You with my children’s hearts and minds. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Do you feel weary today? Stuck?

The Lord’s arm is never too short to reach the heart that feels stuck or the body that feels weary (Numbers 11:23).

When you move beyond the “I can’t” and actually believe that God can help you with your health, the landscape of your life shifts from a struggle for control to a journey of grace. I know. I’ve been on this healthy journey for three years, and I don’t regret it.

What if we decided to live by faith in our health journey? This is my challenge to myself today.

Repeat Scripture-inspired affirmations and lift them up as prayers daily.

I walked with God as a steward of this temple in holy fear that I would receive as an inheritance.

I received the strength to save many others through the discipline of my sugar addiction.

I marched in obedience and did not perish for the Lord was with me, knowing the battle for my worth belonged to the Lord.

Lord is God alone, keeping me steady despite the scale because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

My family was healed and felt the power at the Master’s call.

I am worth the effort when the weight wouldn’t budge.

I saw the Lord, and I stand now on these promises, for Everything is possible for the one who believes.

The Lord’s arm is never too short to reach the heart that feels stuck or the body that feels weary (Numbers 11:23).

No—I will not turn away.

God is still mighty,

still faithful,

still working.

And His word will not fail.

Friend, the heart of your story is not found in a number on a scale, but in the faithfulness of a God who meets us in our weary moments.

When we look at the great “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11, we see men and women who didn’t have it all figured out. Instead, they simply moved in obedience to a God who is bigger than their impossibilities.

Whether you are navigating the “Red Sea” of sugar cravings or standing in the “furnace” of a social gathering, remember that the Lord’s arm is never too short to reach you. He is the author of your wholeness, and He is inviting you to write a new chapter. In this chapter, the mundane struggle of dieting shifts into a miraculous journey of grace.

Journal Activity: Your Hall of Faith

Rewriting the Impossible

In any story, a protagonist is defined by the obstacles they overcome through faith. Today, you are the protagonist in your own health story. Use the following prompts to bridge the gap between “mere acknowledgment” and “actual belief.”

1. The Giant on the Scale

Reflect: David didn’t focus on the size of Goliath. Instead, he focused on the size of his God (1 Samuel 17:47). What is the “giant” in your health journey right now? Is it a habit, a recurring thought, or a physical limitation?

• Write: “I am running toward [Giant’s Name], knowing the battle for my worth belongs to the Lord because...”

2. The Walls of Jericho

Reflect: The walls didn’t fall because the people were strong, but because they marched in steady, quiet obedience (Joshua 6:20). In your health, obedience often looks like the “boring” habits: drinking your water, choosing a “Lean and Green” meal, or getting enough sleep.

• Write: What is one small act of obedience you can “march” through today? How does this small step reflect your trust in God’s plan?

3. The Fourth Man in the Fire

Reflect: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego weren’t alone in the furnace (Daniel 3:25). When you are in a high-pressure situation—a stressful workday or a kitchen full of old temptations—the Lord is standing there with you.

• Write: Describe a “furnace” moment from this past week. How did you feel the Lord’s presence keeping you steady?

4. Your Hebrews 11 Verse

Reflect: Looking at the litany of faith you just read, choose one biblical figure whose story mirrors your current struggle.

• Write: Create your own personalized “By Faith” verse for this week.

  • Example: “By faith, I chose the ‘Brave YES’ of a healthy dinner over the fleeting pleasure of the drive-thru, for I judged Him faithful who promised me a life of vitality.”

“Everything is possible for the one who believes” (Mark 9:23).

As you close your journal, take a deep breath and remember: you aren’t just losing weight. Instead, ou are gaining the strength to fulfill the calling God has placed on your life. He who calls you to wholeness is faithful, and He will do it.

He is still mighty,
still faithful,
still working.
And His word will not fail.

The house is quiet, the coffee is warm in my favorite mug, and my heart is ready. I love a deep novel, and I’m always looking for ways to grow through a helpful self-help book. Attending church and lifting my voice in prayer are pillars of my life. Yet, I’ve realized that while prayer is me talking to God, the most transformational habit I’ve developed to hear Him speak back has been daily Bible reading.

When Your “Ordinary” Meets His Extraordinary

I remember being a scared teen mom, looking for any shred of stability in a world that felt like it was crumbling. It was in the pages of Scripture that I found a promise to hold onto: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11, NLT).

Later, God’s Word called John and me to a holy “yes” when we read in James: “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you” (James 1:27, NLT).

Even on the days when my soul feels weary and the “ordinary” feels heavy, the Word settles me. I read in Zephaniah that “the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs” (Zephaniah 3:17, NLT). He truly is a gentle warrior who sings over us.

A Morning Encounter with Compassion

Just this morning, I sat with the story of a man who reached out in total desperation. “In one of the villages, Jesus met a man with an advanced case of leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground, begging to be healed. ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.’ Jesus reached out and touched him. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be healed!’ And instantly the leprosy disappeared” (Luke 5:12-13, NLT).

That spoke to my heart as I lifted my own requests before God. It reminded me of His compassion, His “willingness,” to meet us exactly where we are, whether we are facing a physical ailment or a spiritual burden. Without a doubt, my mind and heart are different today because of time in God’s Word.

Why I Reach for Every Woman’s Bible

No matter what my day looks like, I make sure God’s Word is a priority. Some days I listen to a Bible app, but I truly prefer sitting with my physical Bible. I focus better when I’m not distracted by phone notifications.

Lately, I’ve been diving into the Every Woman’s Bible. It is a study Bible for the heart and mind, and it feels like sitting down with a global community of sisters. It features contributions from over one hundred women, scholars, and writers from around the world. These women offer cultural and historical context that makes the text come alive!

I especially love the quotes from godly women in history and the life application sections where wise believers apply God’s Word to our lives today. Also, when I wanted to study a specific topic, there are indexes to help me navigate the Bible more efficiently.

Today, after reading that passage in the book of Luke, I turned to the index for “compassion.” It led me straight to a beautiful truth in the book of Psalms: “Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins” (Psalm 51:1, NLT).

As I closed my Bible, my heart was filled with thankfulness for my salvation and the many ways God has healed me: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. My day will be different because I took time to read His Word and seek God first.

Navigating the Living Word

If you are new to the Bible, it can feel like walking into a massive library without a map. Here is a simple way to understand how it’s put together:

• The Old Testament: This is the first part of the Bible. It tells the story of God’s relationship with His people before Jesus was born. It’s filled with history, poetry, and promises of the Savior to come.

• The New Testament: This begins with the birth of Jesus (the Gospels). It shares His life, His sacrifice, and the beginning of the early church. It is the fulfillment of those Old Testament promises.

If you’ve never read the Bible before, start in the New Testament. I love recommending the NLT because it’s a modern translation that’s easier to understand. I also encourage new readers to start with the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

How to Find a Verse

If you haven’t read the Bible before, you may wonder how to find a verse. Think of a reference like an address. In Luke 5:12, “Luke” is the book, “5” is the chapter (the big number), and “12” is the verse (the tiny number).

At the beginning of the Bible, there is a table of contents. In the Every Woman’s Bible, there is an alphabetical listing of Bible Books. After you find the correct Book (in this case, Luke), you can look up the chapter, then the verse. Don’t worry, you’ll pick it up!

A 7-Day Journey: Finding Your Story

My friend, can we be honest for a moment? Reading Leviticus makes me squirm.

We open our Bibles to those Old Testament passages, and we read verses like, “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19:2, NIV). Instead of feeling inspired, I often feel defeated. I look at my own life. I see my quick temper when the house is chaotic. I see my anxious thoughts about the future. I see my selfish reactions when my plans get interrupted. I see a gap as wide as the ocean between God’s standard and my reality.

It is easy to think holiness is about white-knuckling our way to better behavior. We try to scrub ourselves clean. We set up new rules for our week. We promise ourselves we will do better. I will not raise my voice today. I will be patient. But by Tuesday afternoon, we are exhausted and messy again. The standard feels like a heavy weight we cannot carry.

But then we look at the Gospel of Mark. We see Jesus walking right into the middle of the mess.

Jesus did not stand at a distance and demand that people clean themselves before approaching Him. In Mark 5, we read the story of a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. By the standards of Leviticus, she was ceremonially unclean. She was an outcast. Anyone she touched would become unclean, too.

She should have stayed away. The law demanded separation.

But she reached out. She pressed through the crowd. She touched the hem of His garment.

Religion says her uncleanness would make Him dirty. But Jesus shows us that His holiness is contagious. His power made her clean. He did not recoil. He did not scold her for breaking the rules of segregation. He stopped. He looked for her. He called her “Daughter” (Mark 5:34).

“Holiness isn’t about the absence of mess. It’s about the presence of a Savior who steps right into it.”

This is the scandalous grace of the Gospel. We often view holiness as a museum exhibit—something pristine, fragile, and behind glass. We think we must not touch it with our dirty hands. But Jesus is not a fragile exhibit. He is a physician. He is a Savior.

Friend, I want to remind you that you don’t have to hide your “unholy” parts from Him. The beautiful, terrifying truth is that we cannot bridge the gap on our own. We stop trying to be the impressive version of ourselves and simply bring our broken, messy selves to the One who is Holy.

He doesn’t just want your obedience. He wants you.

When we surrender our striving, we find that true holiness is not achieved by our grit. It is received by His grace. It is His life flowing into ours, transforming us from the inside out, just as power flowed from Him to that desperate woman in the crowd.

A Prayer for Your Week

Lord, I am tired of trying to be enough on my own. Your standard of holiness is beautiful, but it reveals how far I fall short. Thank You that I do not have to hide my mess from You. Thank You that Jesus came to touch the unclean and make us whole. I surrender my striving today. Make me holy not by my effort, but by Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

1. Identify the Gap: Identify one area of your life where you feel you are “not enough” or struggle to meet God’s standard. Write it down. Then, if you have a red pen, write “Covered by Grace” over it.

2. The Physician’s Call: Read Mark 2:17. Jesus says He came not for the healthy, but for the sick. How does admitting your spiritual “sickness” actually bring you closer to His holiness?

3. God’s Thoughts Toward You: Read Psalm 40:17: “But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me.” How does it comfort you to know that the Holy God thinks of you in your need?

Your First Steps: A Guide for the Newest Reader

If you have never opened a Bible before, it can feel a little overwhelming. But remember, God’s Word is “alive and active” (Hebrews 4:12).

Corrie ten Boom often reminded us that “the Bible is a gold mine, but you have to dig for the gold.” Here is how to start digging:

• Start with the Gospel of John: Instead of starting on page one, read the story of Jesus and His love for you.

• Pray before you read: Simply ask, “Lord, help me understand what You want to say to me today.”

• Read the notes at the bottom: Use the Life Application notes to explain the “bridge” between the ancient story and your current life.

• Pick one thing to do: After you read, ask yourself, “What is one way I can act on this today?” (Romans 12:2).

• Give yourself grace: You don’t have to understand everything at once. Just keep showing up.

Do you want to know what God asks of you?

Sometimes discerning God’s will can be confusing, but I have found that by focusing on the main things, it all falls into place. Here are 9 important things God asks each of us to do.

So many times, we want God to reveal Himself to us. We question if He is real. And if we believe in Him, we expect Him to put Himself on display in big ways.

In the 36 years since I became a Christian, I’ve learned more about God by focusing on the priorities—the main things He asks us to do in the Bible—than any other way. It seems the Bible is full of many rules, but when we focus on the most important things, the rest is taken care of.

When we do what God has already asked us to do, He will reveal so much more about Himself and His ways. I learn about Him by turning to Him, depending on Him, thanking Him, and loving others.

What does He reveal? His loving heart. His willingness to provide for us. And His concern for people in this world. As I follow Him in these ways, I am changed, and the world is impacted for God.

What are the main things God asks us to do?

1. Believe in Jesus

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” — Acts 16:31

Understand that because of your sin, you deserve to be separated from God for eternity, but through the sacrifice of Jesus, you can be saved from punishment and can spend eternity with Him. All you need to pray is, “Jesus, I believe in you. Please take my sin and give me eternity with you instead.” It’s that easy.

2. Put living for Jesus first

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Matthew 6:33

This means daily seeking Jesus, reading the Bible, loving others as Jesus did, and trusting He will care for your needs.

3. Read the Bible

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Reading the Bible teaches us more about God and His ways. We learn how to live life more effectively. When you sit down to read the Bible, pray, “Lord, help me to understand.” Also, ask someone who has been reading the Bible for a while to help you understand better.

4. Become involved in a local church

“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” — Hebrews 10:25

Seek friendships with Christ-followers. We are not meant to follow Jesus alone, but we gain help and encouragement from other believers. When you regularly join other Christ-followers, they will be there to help and support you, and you can do the same for them.

5. Forgive others

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” — Luke 6:37

People will hurt us … a lot. Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting. It means turning it over to God and allowing Him to handle the situation. God doesn’t take sin lightly; trust that.

6. Live with thankfulness, not complaining

“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” — Philippians 2:14

When we spend our day thanking God for all we have instead of complaining about what we don’t have, everything changes, starting with our attitude and view of life. We will notice the difference in our attitude during the day, and others will.

7. Pray all the time

“Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Praying without ceasing just means when you’re thinking about something over and over, it’s a good sign that it’s something you can pray about. Ask God to help with the situation and give you wisdom on how to handle it.

8. Love others

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud... Love never fails.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

When we love others as God asks us to, they benefit, and we do too.

9. Care for the widows and orphans

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” — James 1:27

A symbol of being a Christian is not doing all you can to take care of yourself, but doing all you can to care for others.

A Prayer for Help

These things don’t sound easy, do they? The truth is that everything God asks us to do is impossible unless we turn to Him and ask Him for help and strength. If you want to obey God in these ways, ask Him for help. We cannot live as Christ-followers in our own strength.

The first step is to pray this prayer:

Jesus, I want to follow you in these ways. Please help me and bring people into my life to show me Your ways.

Now, I want to pray for you:

Dear Jesus, you see my friend and their desire to live as you ask. Please help them today to draw closer to you and desire to do these things. And as they do, I pray you will reveal yourself in amazing ways. Amen.
